Chapter Twenty Three

“This is turning out to be a hell of a day,” Dirk thought as he recounted the sources of information that had added to his network. He fastened his seatbelt, started the car, and maneuvered it toward the parking lot exit. He autodialed a number on his cell phone as he turned onto the street.

“Jordan Scott,” the voice said.

“Jordan, Dirk Johnston here. I’ve got the tape,” he bragged.

“What took you so long?”

“I told you I don’t like to run too long in the same place,” Dirk said. “So how about it, can I attend the meeting?”

“I spoke to my group, and they’re fine with that,” Jordan replied. “I’ll call to let you know the time and place.”

“Great! One more thing. I’ve lined up an attorney who is willing to present your information in what will probably be the first and most high profile lawsuit evolving from the crash. I think it’s vitally important he attend this meeting as well.”

“I’ll have to check with the others on that as well .”

“Excellent. I’ll be in touch.” Dirk disconnected the call to Jordan, simultaneously raised his left knee to the steering wheel to guide the car, reached into his shirt pocket with his left hand and retrieved the business card of Wayne A. Bankhead, Esquire, Attorney at Law. With his remaining free hand, he dialed the number. As the phone began to ring, Dirk had to drop the card in order to use his left hand to maneuver around a squirrel that darted across the road.

Several rings later, Wayne’s voice mail picked up. After listening to the short greeting, Dirk informed the attorney that he could attend the meeting with Jordan, Gail, and Dr. Kawalski.

“It’s easier to get forgiveness than permission,” he thought, acknowledging the fact that none of the group had as of yet approved Wayne’s addition to their cadre.
